The County of Brant surrounds the City of Brantford, with Paris as its largest town and villages such as St. George, Burford, Glen Morris, Scotland and Oakland scattered across farm country. The Grand and Nith rivers meet in Paris, which is known for its historic core and its cobblestone buildings, and which has grown quickly with new subdivisions in recent years.

Paris

In the heritage core, older homes and a few cobblestone houses need careful work. Many have had forced air added long after they were built, and some still run boilers. Cooling a house without ducts usually means ductless mini-splits or small-duct systems, with outdoor units and line sets placed out of sight of the street. Newer Paris subdivisions have high-efficiency gas furnaces and central air, and the usual mid-life repairs and replacements apply.

Summer humidity in the river valley makes air conditioning sizing important. An oversized unit leaves the house clammy; a two-stage or variable-speed unit, sized with a heat-gain calculation, handles moisture better. See central air installation.

St. George, Burford and the villages

Smaller communities across the county have a mix of older village homes, newer houses on the edges and farms around them. Natural gas reaches the larger villages and some roads; many rural properties use propane, oil, electricity or wood. HVAC work in Brant County therefore includes a lot of propane and oil furnace service, and conversions to heat pumps.

Why rural Brant suits heat pumps

For a home heated with propane, oil or electricity, a cold-climate heat pump is usually much cheaper to run, adds air conditioning, and qualifies for up to $7,500 under the Home Renovation Savings Program, much more than gas-heated homes receive. Keeping the old furnace as backup for the coldest nights is common. Run your numbers in the heat pump vs gas calculator.

Electricity depends on the address

Parts of Brant County are served by GrandBridge Energy and others by Hydro One. It matters mainly for all-electric heat pumps that need a service upgrade, which the contractor coordinates with the right utility and the Electrical Safety Authority.

Farms, shops and outbuildings

Brant County farms often have shops, barns and garages that need heat. Propane or natural gas unit heaters and radiant tube heaters are common in large spaces, while an insulated workshop or farm office suits a ductless heat pump that also cools in summer. Gas lines to outbuildings must be installed by a TSSA-certified technician and pressure-tested. See gas lines and fireplaces.

Wells and water heaters

Rural Brant homes on wells often have hard or iron-rich water, which shortens the life of water heaters. A softener or filter helps, and tankless units need yearly descaling. Ask the contractor to test the water hardness when quoting a new water heater.
