Enbridge Gas (natural gas in the towns) · Hydro One (electricity)

Haldimand County runs from the Grand River towns of Caledonia and Cayuga down to the Lake Erie shore, a wide stretch of farmland, small towns and lakeside communities. Its heating and cooling picture is more varied than almost anywhere around Hamilton, because the fuel a house uses depends heavily on where it sits.

Gas in town, everything else outside

Natural gas from Enbridge serves Caledonia, Hagersville, Cayuga, Dunnville and Jarvis, along with some nearby roads. Outside the gas network, homes heat with propane, heating oil, electric baseboards or furnaces, wood, or a combination built up over the years. Electricity across the county is distributed by Hydro One, which took over the former Haldimand County Hydro.

That mix shapes what HVAC work in Haldimand looks like:

  • Gas furnace and AC repairs and replacements in the towns.
  • Propane and oil furnace service on rural properties, which needs technicians certified for those fuels.
  • Conversions from oil, propane or electric baseboard to a cold-climate heat pump.
  • Ductless mini-splits for farmhouses, additions and lakeside cottages.

Why heat pumps make sense here

For a home heated with propane, oil or electricity, a cold-climate heat pump is usually much cheaper to run, and it adds air conditioning. Those homes also qualify for the larger Home Renovation Savings rebate, up to $7,500 for a qualifying air-source system, compared with a much smaller rebate for gas-heated homes. Many rural owners keep their propane or oil furnace as backup. The heat pump vs gas calculator handles propane, oil and electric, and the rebate guide explains the steps.

Older rural homes with a 100-amp electrical service may need an upgrade for an all-electric system, while a hybrid setup usually does not.

The lakeshore

Along Lake Erie, from Port Maitland and Dunnville west to Selkirk and beyond, many properties are cottages or converted cottages. Seasonal homes often need heat only to keep pipes from freezing, or heating and cooling for part of the year. Ductless heat pumps suit them well. Lakeside winds and spray are hard on outdoor equipment, so placement and a sheltered mounting spot matter.

Distances and response times

Haldimand is large, and a contractor based on the far side of Hamilton may take a long time to reach Dunnville or Selkirk. We match requests to contractors who already work your part of the county. See the town pages for Caledonia, Hagersville and Dunnville.

Wood heat and mixed systems

Plenty of rural Haldimand homes burn wood in a stove or an outdoor boiler alongside a furnace. Mixed systems like that can work well, but they need to be set up so the furnace or heat pump covers the house when nobody is home to feed the fire. When adding a heat pump to a house with a wood stove, the contractor should look at where the stove heats and where it does not, and size and place the new system to fill the gaps.

Getting a contractor

Use the request form, choose your town or Haldimand (rural), and tell us what fuel the house uses. We pass it to one licensed contractor who covers that area.
