Enbridge Gas (natural gas in the towns) · Hydro One (electricity)
Norfolk County stretches along the north shore of Lake Erie, south-west of Haldimand. Its main towns are Simcoe, Port Dover, Waterford and Delhi, and the land between them is some of Ontario’s richest farmland, once known for tobacco and now for fruit, vegetables and specialty crops. Along the lake, Port Dover, Turkey Point, Port Rowan and Long Point are busy in summer and quieter in winter.
In the towns
Simcoe and the other towns are on natural gas, and most homes have gas furnaces and central air. Older houses near the town centres may have converted systems or boilers, while newer streets have high-efficiency equipment now reaching mid-life. Heating and cooling work in Simcoe and the other towns is mostly repairs, replacements and tune-ups, with growing interest in hybrid heat pumps when air conditioners fail.
Farms and rural homes
Away from the towns, much of Norfolk is off the gas line. Farmhouses and rural homes use propane, oil, electricity or wood, and farm operations add greenhouses, barns and workshops with their own heat. Propane and oil furnaces need technicians certified for those fuels, and running out of fuel in a cold snap is a common no-heat call: keep an eye on the tank.
For these homes, a cold-climate heat pump usually cuts heating costs substantially and adds cooling. Because they are not heated with natural gas, they qualify for the larger Home Renovation Savings rebate. The heat pump rebate guide explains the amounts and the order of steps.
Lakeside cottages
Many lakeside properties are cottages, part-year homes or converted cottages lived in year-round. They often have electric baseboards, a propane space heater or no central system at all. Ductless mini-splits suit them well: efficient heat and cooling, room by room, without ductwork. For a seasonal place, a contractor can set up a low winter setting to keep the plumbing safe. Lakeside wind and spray are tough on outdoor units, so a sheltered spot and a solid mount matter.
Electricity
Hydro One distributes electricity across Norfolk County, having taken over the former Norfolk Power. An all-electric heat pump in an older rural home sometimes needs a service upgrade, which the contractor coordinates with Hydro One and the Electrical Safety Authority.
Greenhouses, barns and farm offices
Norfolk’s farms and greenhouse operations have heating needs well beyond a house: unit heaters, radiant tubes and large boilers. For farmhouses, workers’ housing and farm offices, residential equipment is the norm, and ductless heat pumps are a practical way to heat and cool buildings without ducts. Gas and propane lines to outbuildings must be installed by a TSSA-certified technician.
Hot water on wells
Rural Norfolk homes on wells often have hard or iron-rich water. A softener protects a new water heater, and a tankless unit should have isolation valves fitted for yearly descaling.
Getting a contractor
Norfolk is large, and a technician coming from Hamilton can take well over an hour. Use the request form, choose your town or Norfolk (rural), and say what fuel the house uses. We pass it to one licensed contractor who already works that part of the county. See also Haldimand County.
Questions people ask
Who supplies electricity in Norfolk County?
Hydro One, which took over the former Norfolk Power. Enbridge Gas supplies natural gas in the towns.
What is the best way to heat a Turkey Point cottage?
For most cottages, ductless heat pumps are the best fit: efficient heat and air conditioning, no ducts, and a rebate if the cottage is not heated with gas.
Can a heat pump replace propane on a Norfolk farmhouse?
Often yes, either fully or as a hybrid with the propane furnace as backup. It usually lowers running costs and qualifies for the larger rebate.
