Caledonia sits on the Grand River where Highway 6 crosses it, about 20 minutes south of the Hamilton Mountain. It is Haldimand County’s largest town and has grown steadily as a commuter community, with new subdivisions spreading out from the old river town. That growth means two quite different kinds of HVAC work.
The older town
Near the river and along Argyle Street, many houses date from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Some have been converted from older heating systems, some still run boilers, and many have had forced air and central air added over the years, with ductwork fitted in where it would go. In those homes, comfort problems often trace back to the ducts: undersized returns, long runs to upstairs rooms, or rooms with no return at all. A contractor replacing the furnace should look at the ducts too. Where cooling a room is difficult, a ductless head can be simpler than new ductwork.
Newer Caledonia
The subdivisions built since the 1990s, and the much larger growth of the 2000s and 2010s, have high-efficiency gas furnaces and central air. As in Binbrook and Waterdown, much of that equipment is now 10 to 25 years old. Furnace repair in Caledonia is common in winter, AC repair in summer, and owners of 2000s homes are increasingly replacing both. A hybrid heat pump in place of the AC is worth pricing at the same time.
Owners in the newest phases tend to ask for duct cleaning and balancing more than new equipment.
Rural properties around Caledonia
Outside the town, on the roads toward Hagersville, York and Seneca, some homes are on propane, oil or electric heat. For those, a cold-climate heat pump can cut heating costs a lot, and the Home Renovation Savings rebate for homes not heated with gas is much larger. The heat pump rebate guide explains it.
Summer humidity near the river
Caledonia’s river valley can be humid in summer. An oversized air conditioner cools quickly but leaves the air damp. Two-stage or variable-speed equipment, sized with a heat-gain calculation, handles humidity better, and a damp basement may need its own dehumidifier. See air quality for options.
Commuters and scheduling
Many Caledonia households commute to Hamilton or beyond, which makes daytime appointments hard. Contractors who work the town regularly are often able to offer early-morning, evening or Saturday slots for tune-ups and quotes, and to give a narrow arrival window. Say on the request form when you can be home, and whether someone else can let the technician in. For emergencies, the contractor will work around you as far as they can.
Water heaters in Caledonia
As in much of Ontario, many Caledonia homes rent their water heater. If yours is approaching 12 years old, compare the rental total with a purchase before the tank fails; the rent vs buy guide shows how.
Getting a contractor
Use the request form and choose Caledonia. We pass your request to one licensed contractor who works the town and call you back to arrange a visit. See Haldimand County for the rest of the county.
